HBO is rebooting the 1978 Golden Globe-nominated musical “Grease." HBO Max, the companies new streaming service, has ordered “Grease: Rydell High," inspired by the classic movie. The show reprises some old characters with new. Set in the 1950s, the musical will feature classic songs from the first film and new original tunes.

“Grease is an iconic pop-culture phenomenon that works for every generation, and I’m thrilled that our friends at Paramount were excited about the idea of opening up the show and putting it on a larger canvas for a weekly series,” said Sarah Aubrey, head of original content, HBO Max. “This is high school and life in small-town USA told on the scale of a big rock’n’roll musical. It’s Grease 2.0 but with the same spirit, energy, and excitement you immediately think of when you hear any of these iconic songs. You’re the One That I Want!”

“We’re going to build out the world of this show which everybody loves, in that musical style, and build basically a ‘High School Musical’ kind of experience that will be a big fun rock and roll musical,” said WarnerMedia chairman Bob Greenblatt at the Mipcom conference in Cannes.

The original stars, John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John will host a special “Meet ‘n’ Grease” movie sing-a-long event in West Palm Beach, Florida on Friday, Dec. 13.

HBO Max is set to debut next spring.
