Schenectady, NY - The seniors on this year's Union hockey team were freshmen on the school's national championship team. But since the title win in 2014, there has been some slippage in terms of wins.
But the class of 2017 got its final collegiate go-round off to a strong start this past Friday in Ann Arbor, Mich. by beating nationally ranked Michigan. And even though the Wolverines managed to earn a weekend split by winning Saturday's rematch, Union returned to Schenectady feeling good.
"We're taking the positives out of Friday right now," said senior forward Mike Vecchione following practice Tuesday. "But we're looking at the negatives of Saturday and figuring out what we need to fix, so I think all in all it was a great weekend for us. Obviously we want to come out with two wins up there, but we're happy to get one, and the second game taught us a lot about ourselves."
Union (1-1) will spend this coming weekend on the road, Friday playing American International College in Springfield, Mass. Then Saturday the Dutchmen will be in Bridgeport, Conn. facing Sacred Heart.
